Name Meaning: CBGB-OMFUG stands for "Country, Bluegrass, Blues, and Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers". Original Vision: Hilly Kristal originally intended for the venue to feature country and bluegrass music, but it quickly became the epicenter for raw, original rock music. The Two Rules: Bands were required to move their own equipment and, most importantly, play original music—no cover bands allowed. The "Scene": It became the home base for bands that defined 1970s punk, including The Ramones, Television, Blondie, Talking Heads, and the Patti Smith Group. The 1980s: In the 1980s, the club became known for hosting Sunday hardcore punk matinees, with bands like Bad Brains, Agnostic Front, and the Beastie Boys. Closure: Due to a rent dispute with the Bowery Residents' Committee, CBGB closed its doors on October 15, 2006, with a final 3.5-hour performance by Patti Smith.
